Texture series #3: Broken rib

I love a textured knit but I am also a little bit lazy when it comes to reading complicated charts. Enter broken rib! It is an easy way to achieve a gorgeous texture — all over or just in a few places — plus it really is straightforward. The first row is only knit stitches and the second row is ribbing, i.e. one knit and one purl. Then you repeat these two rows.

The combination of an engaging knitting experience, which I can still put down and pick up any moment, with a lovely result got me to compile this round-up of knitting patterns, using broken rib texture!

Milena Beanie by Karina Szocs

This is the pattern through which I learned about broken rib, and I haven’t looked back since! With its triple folded brim, Karina Szocs’ Milena beanie kept me warm throughout last winter. Both the knitting and the result are lovely. The pattern comes in one size and is drafted for fingering and lave weight yarns held together. It’s available in English and German.

Timbo Vest by Gabriella Calderini

The Timbo Vest looks so cozy and can easily be dressed up and down, depending on the season. I particularly love the colour blocking options and all over texture with the sweet stockinette detail on the shoulders. Written for bulky weight yarns means quick progress and quick finish. The pattern is free, available in Spanish and English and comes in five sizes.

Mycroft by Isabell Kraemer

Isabell Kraemer, also known as Lilalu72 on Instagram, designed her Mycroft pattern with lovely broken rib details on the upper yoke, hems and sleeve cuffs. Did I mention before how much I like a boat neck? This pattern is for worsted weight yarns, features seven sizes and even comes in seven languages!

Easy Rib Gloves by Easy as Knit

Another accessory to round out this round-up! The Easy Rib Gloves are fingerless gloves with all over broken rib texture. The worsted weight yarn pattern provides one size but is available in four languages. Make sure to also check out Easy as Knit’s other Easy Rib patterns, such as their beanie, neckwarmer and scarf!
